2023 marks the debut of The Austin Business Journal inaugural list of commercial building owners. The list, ranked by total commercial property owned locally, encompasses a wide swath of commercial properties across office, industrial and retail holdings. The list was compiled with help from several sources, most notably CoStar Group Inc. who partnered with ABJ to generate ownership reports across the sectors mentioned. ABJ also relied on survey updates directly from owners, ABJ news, public documents such as SEC disclosures, and company websites. The data focuses on built structures only, including a few currently under construction by the owner. Ownership frameworks span RIETS and investment groups to owner-developers and owner-occupied properties, such as Apple and Oracle. Acreage and planned projects were not considered. Hospitality, governmental or educational holdings were not tracked. A look at multifamily property ownership could be added in the future. Yardi also contributed its real estate analytics for a look at how sales price per square foot has changed over the past four years since 2019. See Aug. 11-17, 2023 weekly edition.
