Biotherapies: The next frontier in vision medicine


Biotherapies – a key focus at the UPMC Vision Institute — are treatments in which substances from living organisms, or lab-made versions of substances, are used to treat disease and illness.

“It starts with what is called biologics,” says Dr. José-Alain Sahel, director of the UPMC Vision Institute. “Like the antibodies that we use to counteract (to some) pathological mechanisms.”
