After the tragic Ghost Ship Fire in Oakland in late 2016, housing activist Randy Shaw had an epiphany about the Bay Area’s housing crisis: Things must be bad if artists can no longer find safe, affordable housing in Oakland.
The East Bay city had once been a enclave for Bay Area artists, but a booming economy forced out many artists or left willing to live in dangerous conditions.
“I had never thought about writing a book about housing until that moment,” he said.
