New York state has a long history with wine.
The nation’s oldest continuously operating winery is Brotherhood, located in Washingtonville, in Orange County.
But up until the 1970s, the state’s industry didn’t really take off.
That started to change with the passage of the 1976 Farm Winery Act. It allowed grape growers to start wineries and sell directly to the public.
Within a decade, the number of wineries in the state grew by more than 300%.
