St. Jude develops cure for ‘bubble boy’ disease


A disease made well-known by John Travolta and a 1976 TV movie has been cured in Memphis.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has cured 10 children with SCID-X1 — commonly known as "bubble boy" disease — who, until now, would not have lived past a first or second birthday. To do so, the hospital developed a cutting-edge gene therapy that uses deactivated HIV as a delivery system.
