Baltimore retailer Shoe City files for bankruptcy, closing 39 stores in Md., Va., D.C.

The Baltimore-based shoe retailer said a failed sale to the Athlete's Foot parent company and suppliers' unwillingness to provide high-end products and new sneaker releases doomed the chain.
