Cyclist Floyd Landis getting into Portland cannabis business
In another sign that a competitive marketplace is driving creative differentiation, three TRU Cannabis recreational marijuana shops in Portland are planning to rebrand as Floyd’s of Leadville.
That’s Floyd as in Floyd Landis, who for three days in 2006 — until a positive doping test was revealed — was a heroic winner of the Tour de France.
“We think we can connect with people who like an active lifestyle and who don’t see marijuana in terms of the stereotypical lazy person,” the retired…
Austin’s craft beer world is getting smaller: New breweries launch with hyper-local focus
As beer production ramps up across the country, it's getting more local.
Many of the nation's biggest craft beer producers saw their production flatten last year, according to data from the Brewers Association. Demand is slowing for many large, regional craft brewers while more microbreweries pop up and churn out a few hundred barrels a year — not a lot, relatively speaking, in the beer business.
That can be seen among recent brewery openings in the Austin area. The Brewer's Table, which debuted…
Old Soul part of restaurant planned in Sacramento Valley Station
A sandwich company is planning an outpost at the Sacramento Valley Station, serving a locally familiar coffee.
Old Soul Co. will provide coffee grounds, baked goods and flavor syrups for Sourdough & Co., which will occupy about 2,000 square feet at the train station.
Jason Griest, Old Soul’s co-owner, said the station spot will serve his company’s items, but it’s not a new Old Soul location.
“We are just planning on being a high-end supplier for Sourdough & Co.,” he said. “I think…

New Riff releasing bourbon soon, owner talks about the four-year wait
After four years aging in new charred oak barrels, Greater Cincinnati distillery New Riff's bourbon will be made available to the public this summer. Owner Ken Lewis didn't have to wait that long to make bourbon, but he wouldn't do it any other way.
New Riff Distilling, at 24 Distillery Way in Newport, is releasing two bourbons on Aug. 1: its bottled in bond bourbon priced at $40 for 750 ml, and single-barrel bourbon at barrel proof – the same strength it is in the barrel without dilution.

Medifast stock, up 130 percent this year, among biggest gainers in U.S.
If you had to guess which Greater Baltimore public company's stock price was up the most this year, who would it be?
Maybe McCormick & Co Inc.? The Sparks spice maker has been growing and late last year acquired the French's mustard and Frank's RedHot Sauce brands. Wrong. The company's stock price is up 14 percent year-to-date.
What about Under Armour Inc.? Shares of the Baltimore sportswear maker are up 57 percent this year as the company looks to come back from a rough 2017. Wrong again.
The…
Raleigh sushi rice exec talks timeline for 305-job expansion
When a tiny, two-person sushi rice operation scored an incentives pledge from the state for nearly $2 million back in February, eyebrows were raised.
Mass. recreational marijuana sales could generate $219M in taxes in first two years
The state is expecting recreational marijuana sales to generate $216 million in revenue for the state and up to $3 million for local municipalities in the first two years alone, a figure slightly behind earlier projections.
According to a study released Friday by the Department of Public Health, sales tax revenue from the state's 6.25 percent sales tax and 10.75 percent excise tax on recreational marijuana will total approximately $61.6 million in fiscal 2019 — which begins July 1, 2018 — and…
