Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defect, according to the Centers for Disease Control, and unfortunately, they have been difficult to treat.

Traditional treatment required the insertion of a synthetic blood vessel and, because synthetic materials cannot grow as the child ages, the patients may have to undergo multiple open-heart surgeries, increasing risk of infection and limiting overall quality of life.
