Google layoffs: As it builds a huge new tower here, news drops that Alphabet is cutting 12,000 jobs


Google parent Alphabet Inc. on Jan. 20 said it will cut about 12,000 jobs in a 6% workforce reduction that is the latest in a wave of layoffs in the technology sector.

CEO Sundar Pichai said the move will come in all of the Silicon Valley-based company's units and geographies. But some areas will be more heavily impacted, including recruiting and projects outside of the company’s core businesses.
