Hostess puts its packaging on a diet as part of sustainability push


Eliminating the tin tie from bags of Hostess Donettes bags may seem a small step, but it's an important part of the snack food company's efforts to combat global warming.

A move by Lenexa, Kansas-based Hostess Brands Inc. to remove the tin ties that helped keep bags of small doughnuts closed resulted in an annual savings of 215,000 pounds of steel (roughly equivalent to the weight of 43 Ford F-150 trucks), more than 150,000 pounds of plastic and another 700 pounds of glue.
