Japanese dessert trend comes to Waikiki with new café at Royal Hawaiian Center


A new dessert shop will open this week in the Paina Lanai food court at the Royal Hawaiian Center.

Kokoro Café, the first business venture for husband and wife co-owners Gil and Lisa Ann Shin, will specialize in a local take on Taiyaki Ice Cream, a Japanese dessert trend that serves up ice cream in fish-shaped waffle cones. The trend became popular in the states in 2016, partly due to NYC-based Taiyaki.

The Waikiki café, however, will sell one of four ice cream flavors in a shaka-shaped waffle…
