New owner talks plans for 90-year-old downtown Raleigh restaurant


The new owner of the Mecca Restaurant says he plans to keep the eatery as it is: a historic diner serving up good food in the heart of downtown Raleigh.

Empire Eats CEO Greg Hatem has struck a deal to purchase the nearly 90-year-old restaurant from its longtime owners, the Dombalis family.

“It’s more about carrying on the tradition,” Hatem says. “You’re not an owner, you’re a steward of something like that.”
