REVIEW: Queen City Opera’s ‘Defiant Requiem’ a stirring experience


A performance in a historic space can add an extra layer of meaning to a great musical work. On Sunday evening, Queen City Opera’s performance of “Defiant Requiem,” a multimedia work featuring Verdi’s Requiem Mass, took on an added layer of symbolism in the rotunda of the Cincinnati Museum Center in Union Terminal.

Described as a “concert-drama,” the work honors a courageous choir of Jewish prisoners who performed Verdi’s Requiem in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp (Terezín).…
