Shelby, Walker counties rank at top of list where residents get the most benefits from social security

Two metro Birmingham counties have landed in the top 10 Alabama counties where Social Security income goes further than most.

That’s according to a recent study by financial technology company SmartAsset that analyzed Social Security income, cost of living data, and taxes across all counties to determine where people who rely heavily on social security as a main source of income get the most for their money.

Shelby County ranked eighth in the state, and Walker County ranked 10th.
