John P. Schuler, a retired Navy pilot, founded this business in 1961 as a one-man shop. From an office in downtown Austin, he sold insurance policies and bonds to folks from the University of Texas, fellow veterans, friends, family and small businesses. A half century later, Time Insurance Agency is still going strong, and its evolution offers lessons for other companies, whether or not they are owned by a single family.
