UPMC lawyer, Highmark chief legal officer spar in court


Highmark Health's chief legal officer testified Monday afternoon that he never believed a term sheet the insurer signed with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was the final agreement governing the next five years of the contested relationship between Highmark and UPMC.

"We understood (that the consent decree) was what we would be bound by," said Thomas L. VanKirk, who is also EVP and secretary of the Pittsburgh-based healthcare company.
