94-year-old entrepreneur and grandson create upscale smokehouse, beer garden, music venue and event space in EaDo district


In 2017, John Toomey secured a parcel of real estate in Houston’s developing EaDo district that sat next to land his family has owned since 1900. With frontage on Leeland Street south of downtown, he had the lot he needed to bring his latest dream to life. At the age of 94, he opened J-Bar-M BBQ — a smokehouse, beer garden, music venue and event space all in one.
