Real estate investor Castle Lanterra Properties paid $51.6 million for this 23-building apartment community a few years ago. Then it invested millions of dollars in upgrades, like renovating some units and expanding the fitness center. That led it to some unique buyers, including the Housing Authority of the city of Austin and the Austin Affordable Housing Corp.

The project could include a second tower, contain at least 885,000 square feet of office space and is intended to create a 18-hour urban center downtown, according to a preapplication filed with the city.

Companies will have about three-and-a-half months to complete the process by the Oct. 31 deadline, Guy Kaulukukui, director of the city’s Department of Enterprise Services, told Pacific Business News.

The law applies to all rental buildings in the state except for owner-occupied homes with less than four units. New rules relate to lease renewals, eviction processes and background checks.

8×8 Inc. has signed a lease for a new 178,000-square-foot corporate headquarters space in Campbell, where the company told the Business Journal it will have about 1,000 employees when it moves in.
