American Savings Bank, which recently opened a new branch in its newly built headquarters building in Honolulu, broke ground Friday on another new branch, less than two miles away in the heart of Kalihi.

The bank bought the 27,235-square-foot parcel at 2130 N. King St., between Gulick Avenue and Richard Lane, two years ago for $2.45 million, according to public records.

Housing advocates hope a new ordinance waiving parking, compatibility and other requirements on qualifying affordable housing developments will lead to more income-restricted residential units — and help Austin deal with serious affordability challenges.

A Union Hill estate belonging to David Cole, retired Microsoft senior vice president, came on the market recently at $4.75 million.

Windermere Brokers John Kritsonis and Karl Lindor have the luxe listing, which has already garnered strong interest including a star athlete from the Midwest.

Cole, who loves to travel and fish, wanted a lodge-like estate with a look and feel of some of the grand fishing lodges of the world. The Redmond property, 15 minutes from Microsoft, seemed like the perfect…

One supervisor’s plan to ratchet up restrictions on building large new housing in part of his district met a quiet death at Thursday’s San Francisco Planning Commission hearing.

Supervisor Ahsha Safai had introduced a “Large Residence Special Use District” between City College and San Francisco State to require costly and time-consuming permits for housing that's more than 2,500 square feet or has five or more bedrooms. The purpose, he said, was to curb illegal group housing — overcrowded…

The new Memphis Downtown convention center hotel deal — and the legal fight surrounding it — got a little more complicated last week.

Townhouse Management Co. (THM), the firm that initially partnered with Loews Hotels on the project, is seeking injunctive relief in Davidson County Chancery Court: they want a judge either to prevent Loews from building a 20-plus story hotel or to award damages to THM. The owner of 100 North Main, THM alleges that Loews breached the two firms' contract by securing…
