From “Hades” to “heaven”: Fed-up California landlord and his tenants move to Colorado together
The first snow dusted Colorado Springs in late October.
Tony Hicks — San Jose resident for 37 years, Colorado Springs landlord for 4 months — didn’t take it as a sign he made the wrong move.
“It’s so much better here. It is nicer, cleaner,” said Hicks, a 58-year-old retired engineer and landlord. He sold his three San Jose rental homes this year, bought a half-dozen houses in Colorado Springs, and moved his family, along with several willing and eager tenants, to the Rockies.

Why a $1 million retirement nest egg may not be enough in Denver
Saving $1 million for retirement is a goal many people strive for. But even if they hit that mark, a study from SmartAsset suggests, it won’t be enough to cover living costs in Denver for the really long haul.
“For any prospective retiree it can be a great start, a goal, or an aspirational figure you expect to take you comfortably through your retirement years. However, that million-dollar retirement fund will get you a lot further in some cities than it will in others,” said Steve Sabato, a spokesman with SmartAsset, a personal finance website.
A million dollars will last just shy of 21 years for someone retiring in Denver at the typical age, according to SmartAsset’s calculations, which looked at housing, food, utilities, transportation, health care and other expenses.
Denver ranked 221 out of the 268 cities examined in the study, which also looked at Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Grand Junction and Glenwood Springs. Of that Colorado group, $1 million in savings would stretch the furt..
“Denverization” is a thing in Kansas City — and not a good thing
Ever heard of “Denverization”?
In Kansas City, Mo., it’s a 13-letter word for gentrification, and it doesn’t come with Mile High City perks such as plentiful sunshine and nearby ski slopes.
The Kansas City Star published an editorial last week under the headline “Stop the Denverization of Kansas City. Troost doesn’t need to be hipster-friendly.” The editorial decries city policy that has allowed for new money and development to pour into the city’s East Side without any giveback from builders or protection for low-income residents now being priced out of their once-overlooked, minority neighborhoods.
“The East Side badly needs economic development, so what’s wrong with that?” the editorial asks. “Only that without any serious and legally binding housing policy, Kansas City is allowing its affordable housing crisis to deepen.”
Sound familiar?
K.C. Star opinion writer Melinda Henneberger penned the editorial. It references Denver just once, in the final paragraph, where it talks ab..
