On Wednesday evening, I attended a party for a former colleague at The Columbus Dispatch.

It was a retirement party for Mary Beth Lane, who spent 41 years working as a reporter for a number of publications. I was Mary Beth's editor for a time, and always enjoyed her company and reading her stories.

She is conscientious reporter. She is thorough, thoughtful and honest. And most importantly, she is kind.
