Health Care Heroes: Dr. Rachel Issaka, Fred Hutch


During her medical residency at Northwestern in Chicago, gastroenterologist Rachel Issaka got different reactions when she asked patients to get screened for colon cancer: white patients in a downtown clinic said yes; Black patients in a southside clinic said no. That’s when she decided to dedicate her career improving colorectal cancer outcomes in racial/ethnic minorities and medically underserved populations.
