Stronger laws for nurse-to-patient ratios are back on the table


A bill that would strengthen penalties aimed at hospitals that don’t meet nursing staffing levels is back on the table.

A similar bill passed the Legislature last year, but was vetoed by then-Gov. Jerry Brown. Under the new governor, legislators are hoping for a different outcome.

The first iteration of the bill was noted for its potential to put additional pressure on recruitment and retention for local nurses, as hospitals would face higher fines for not filling out their ranks.
