Think of Milwaukee, and you think of Penny Marshall — or is it the other way around?


For just about anyone who’s not from Milwaukee, the first thing that comes to mind when they hear our city’s fair name is Penny Marshall.

Or rather, the first thing that comes to mind is Marshall’s 1970s-era TV character, Laverne DeFazio.

The “Laverne & Shirley” actress, who later emerged as one of the most powerful and successful directors in Hollywood, died Monday in Hollywood Hills from diabetes-related complications, according to news reports. She was 75.
