Will $1 billion be enough to cover 3M earplug lawsuits?


3M Co. (NYSE: MMM) this week said it was setting aside more than $1 billion to cover the legal costs from a mountain of lawsuits related to a line of military-issue earplugs. But the mountain may be higher than that.

Following the announcement — part of a flurry of big-news statements from 3M on Tuesday — lead plaintiffs’ counsel Bryan Aylstock of Aylstock Witkin Kreis & Overholtz bashed the Maplewood, Minnesota-based manufacturer's effort as "woefully underfunded."
