The Pearl, the name of Charlotte's new innovation district, pays tribute to the area’s African American roots. Business and civic leaders who'd gathered for its groundbreaking promised economic mobility and inclusion will remain core tenets beyond the press releases. And they vowed to make good on earlier commitments to create 5,500 jobs in the innovation district — and more than twice as many communitywide — over the next 15 years.
