It isn’t quite the final product, but C. Kreuger’s Finest Baked Goods is open for business.

The Short North cookie and sweets shop marked its first day Monday, with its first customer arriving at the 17 E. Brickel St. shop right at the 7 a.m. opening.

“We’re about 95 percent there,” is how founder Cheryl Krueger described it this morning.

Krueger is no stranger to the cookie business, having co-founded Cheryl & Co. in 1981 and growing it to a national presence before selling it in 2005.…

In September, Triangle Business Journal profiled Chef Teddy Diggs, who had worked at Il Palio at the Sienna Hotel in Chapel Hill. Diggs departed his role as executive chef there to take on a new endeavor: Coronato.

Recently, the chef hinted on social media the town where he plans to open the restaurant – unveiling that it started with the letter “C.”

Chapel Hill? No, he selected Carrboro for his new restaurant.

“Carrboro continues to grow and grow in population and popularity,” Diggs…

Round 2: Fight!

The second round of our Battle of the Bourbons starts today and lasts all week.

In case you're new to the battle, here's how it works: We've placed 32 Kentucky bourbons on an NCAA-style bracket, and we're letting our readers decide which is best. Each bourbon has been assigned a seed, roughly based on price. (More detail in the notes below.)

After the first round of voting last week, 16 of the 32 bourbons remain. This week's voting will take us to eight, next week down to four…

New place to eat in Folsom

In May, I told you that the operators of Granite Bay-based Dominick’s Italian Market & Deli were planning a new concept in Folsom. That business, called Corner Tavern & Grill, officially debuts at 10 a.m. today. Located at 700 Glenn Drive, Suite 170, it will be a casual “neighborhood bistro,” according to its Facebook page. Dominick Bellizzi and his wife, Raquel, own Dominick’s…

West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe plans to convert a former convenience store into a new butcher shop.

The business operates two retail outlets and cafes in the area. One is inside the Milwaukee Public Market on Water Street. The other, its original location, is on Becher Street in West Allis. The stores sell cheese, sausage, jam, jelly and specialty foods.

Mark Lutz, the owner of West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe, said he bought a property across from the original store and is redeveloping…

This year’s King of Ohio hails from Central Ohio.

The fourth annual Ohio-only beer competition, organized by Rick Armon, who covers the industry from the Akron Beacon Journal, and Pat Woodward, a Columbus-based beer blogger, was held this weekend at Smokehouse Brewing Co.

The chosen style: Belgians.

The winner among the 64 submitted entries: Lancaster-based Rockmill Brewery’s Petite Saison, which first won the saison category before being judged tops overall in a close vote among the six category…

Blake Shelton. Luke Bryan. Jason Aldean. Dierks Bentley. John Rich.

They're all country music stars who have recently opened bars or restaurants on Nashville's Lower Broadway.

Maren Morris weighed in earlier this summer with the below Tweet, which made us wonder: Which female artist would you like to see follow suit?

We asked this year's Women in Music City winners, “Which female country star should be the first to open a bar/restaurant in downtown Nashville?”

Read their answers in the slideshow…

Local pizza restaurant chain Matchbox will replace the Hen Quarter restaurant in downtown Silver Spring, the company said Monday.

The swap makes sense after Hen Quarter owner Thompson Hospitality invested in Matchbox earlier this year. Hen Quarter closed Sunday, and Matchbox plans to renovate and reopen in the first quarter of 2019, said Matchbox CEO Harvey Metro.

It’s the second rebrand for the restaurant space at 616 Ellsworth Drive, which Thompson previously ran as its Austin Grill Tex-Mex…
