Seattle is expensive, can be a traffic nightmare and has a homelessness crisis. But it once again is one of the best cities in the U.S.

The 2019 U.S. News & World Report ranking of best cities ranks the Emerald City at No. 9. That's one spot ahead of 2018, but three places below Seattle's top spot of sixth, in 2016, the first year the publication did the rankings.

The average cost of rent in the Denver area ticked down a shade in recent months but market watchers are sounding the alarm that declining construction activity could upend the market and send prices skyward once more.

Renters in the Mile High metro shelled out an average of $1,506 for their places monthly during the third quarter, according to the Denver Metro Apartment Vacancy and Rent survey from the Apartment Association of Metro Denver. That’s a 1.4% drop from the $1,528 average the survey recorded in the second quarter of this year.

Over the past 12 months, metro rents have risen 2.8%, just a hair above the 2.7% rate of inflation for the region over that time, according to the apartment association’s research.

Vacancy, meanwhile, fell to 4.7% in the third quarter of 2019, the lowest rate since the middle of 2015. There are indications the market could get even tighter.

In a budding industry, Aurora has been handpicked as a landing spot for a green giant. Gotham Greens, the Brooklyn-born company at the forefront of the urban farming industry, is coming to town.

“Where we’re standing will be filled with plant growing beds,” company co-founder and CEO Viraj Puri said while walking the construction site last week. “Our proprietary growing method uses 95% less water and 97% less land than traditional farming.”

A water valve leak in downtown Houston’s newest office tower, which displaced the majority of its primary tenant's employees, is expected to cost nearly $2 million to repair, according to building permits issued by the city of Houston.

The developer of Kilroy Oyster Point, where fintech company Stripe is taking 421,000 square feet, says it's agnostic to whether it fills a potential 2.5 million square feet of additional space with tech or biotech.

This startup plans to hire hundreds of people in Austin after raising $35 million. It is also closing in on new office space to house all of the additional employees.
