Viewpoint: UPMC-Highmark deal’s done, but much to be sorted out


Just as labor negotiations often go down to the wire, the same can be said for Highmark and UPMC’s last-minute 10-year agreement that will provide Highmark members access to UPMC doctors and facilities.

The region’s two largest health care organizations had nearly a decade to reach a long-term deal, only to come to an agreement a week before the June 30 end of a consent decree that would have left thousands of Highmark’s most vulnerable members out-of-network at most UPMC facilities.
