Florida had a solid showing as a dozen chefs and restaurants — including four from Orlando — received nods in the coveted 2019 James Beard Awards as semifinalists.

The semifinalists were announced Feb. 27 and include an array of individual chefs, restaurateurs and restaurants. A fast-casual restaurant chain from Atlanta is entering the Sacramento area, according to the owner of the Rocklin center where the eatery will debut.

Great Wraps has signed a lease for a location in Rocklin Crossings, according to Heather Beal, senior vice president of leasing for center owner Donahue Schriber. The Rocklin location could open in the second quarter of 2019, according to Beal.

The advisory board to the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission is backing the creation of cannabis cafes and pot-consumption events, voting unanimously for the state to develop regulations around the licenses.

The vote is a promising step forward for advocates who have pressed for the state to begin licensing places where people can consume marijuana on-site, but the issue is likely to face pushback from some commissioners still concerned about how such locations would operate.

The Bay Area is holding onto its edge in the national culinary industry with the release of what's expected to kick off a blazing awards season.

The James Beard Foundation posted the list of semifinalists for this year's acclaimed awards, and both rising stars and longtime favorites around the Bay Area nabbed multiple spots in every possible category. The list is the first in a series of selections that will culminate in an early-May awards ceremony akin to the Oscars for the culinary community.…
