The Oakland Fire Department battled a huge blaze into the night Tuesday as developer City Ventures’ nearly completed townhouse development in West Oakland was enveloped in fire.
Officials said that the fire began around 2 a.m. and left 55 units — four of six, four-story townhouses — completely leveled, KTVU reports.
Located at the intersection of West Grand Avenue and Filbert Street, the building was part of City Ventures’ Ice House project, which had begun sales of the homes in mid-April.…

A walk around: Construction is redefining East Franklinton (photos)
It’s pretty easy to get lost in East Franklinton these days, weaving through all the construction. Some streets are unrecognizable from just five years ago.

Casto, Kaufman Development and many of the other major development players in town have been building ever bigger there, inspired by a desire to see this near-downtown…

Ed Goldman: Quibbles & Bits: Instant offers and mascots
I have a couple of things on my mind today — which are roughly two things more than usual, I can hear you calculating. The first concerns a flyer I received in the mail with the salutation, “Get an instant offer on your home.” It came from a company called opendoor.com and had my correct home address on the flyer itself, not just the envelope in which it arrived.
Under a headline in capital letters that said, “ESTIMATED OFFER RANGE,” the flyer showed a minimum and maximum amount of…
What is Amendment 74? And why are so many Colorado leaders against it?
Amendment 74 is getting bashed.
Whether it’s Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, calling it “one of the worst initiatives that I have seen” or Republican Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers labeling it “stupid” and “a disaster for taxpayers of our state and local governments,” Amendment 74 has elicited high-profile opposition far and wide.
The measure, which would amend the Colorado constitution to require that property owners be compensated for devaluation of their property due to government action, has been condemned by dozens of city councils across the state. It has also taken on heavy fire from the Colorado Municipal League as an unwise policy replete with unintended consequences.
The main argument against Amendment 74 is that it will open up the floodgates to litigation, with claims of property value loss being filed against governments that are just exercising their normal land use or zoning authority.
“From a purely municipal perspective, if we start seeing numerous frivolo..
