A Germantown couple plans to turn their passion and family history into a sausage and beer business that is expected to open next fall.

Georgene and Scott Sommer, owners of Old Germantown, want to create an agri-tourism destination at their 120-acre farm on Pleasant View Drive by adding a kitchen, brewery and sausage production facilities. Burger joint chain Checkers Drive-In Restaurants Inc., operator of Checkers and Rally’s restaurants, wants to grow its Milwaukee-area footprint by at least 20 more locations.

The Tampa, Fla.-based chain has about 880 locations nationwide, including four in Wisconsin. Three of those eateries are in the Milwaukee area, and franchise development director Bruce Kim says he sees room for growth over the next five years.
